Located north of Elkins in Tucker County, Thomas and Davis were driven by lumber. Known early as “stump towns;” you could travel through town jumping from stump to stump, Davis was founded by Senator Henry Gassaway Davis to house the workers in the extensive spruce and hardwood timberlands he purchased for between $5 and $15 an acre. At the peak of population in 1902, Davis was home to 3,000 residents and 80 businesses that served the workers. Thomas was named after Thomas Beall Davis, the Senator’s brother. Fueled by coal instead of lumber, the one and one half mile stretch between the two towns was often aglow with the fires of 1,000 coke ovens of the Davis Coal and Coke Company. Today, both of these historic little towns are filled with shops, art and West Virginia made products.
