Using old logging flat-cars turned into passenger cars, the Cass Scenic Railroad is pulled by the same Shay locomotives that brought millions of board feet of lumber down the mountain. Once on board, the great pistons of the massive engines start pulsing, the shaft begins turning, the wheels find traction, and the giant locomotive starts to move, as thick black smoke belches from the stack. As the train rounds the curve up Leatherbark Creek, the pressure builds and the laborious journey up the mountain toward the switchbacks begins. The rest, as they say, is history.
