The Battle of Philippi
The Battle of Philippi was fought on June 3, 1861 in Barbour County, Virginia (now West Virginia). Also called The Philippi Races, it was the first organized land action in the Eastern Theater of the war. Young General George McClellan came into the national spotlight as a result of the Union victory in this relatively bloodless battle.
