Fernow Experimental Forest
Monongahela National Forest The Fernow Experimental Forest is a thriving field laboratory for the research project “Sustainable Forest Ecosystems in the Central Appalachians.” The stony forest floor where soils are only on average three feet deep, typical of West Virginia mountain forests, serves as a good base from which to determine the techniques required to keep area forests viable for both recreation and timber production. Directions: Go North from Elkins on US-33 [S Randolph Ave] for 1.1 miles Turn RIGHT (North) onto US-219 [Randolph Ave] and follow for 21.4 miles Follow the signs from north of the Shavers Fork bridge in downtown Parsons to the Fernow Forest.
