Staunton-Parkersburg Turnpike National Scenic Byway
Now a National Scenic Byway, drive a portion of the historic roadway built to provide transportation access from the upper Shenandoah Valley to the Ohio River. Originally all in western Virginia, the road, authorized in 1826 and completed in 1848, was the first over the mountain route across the Alleghenies. Completed in 1848, the road was considered an engineering marvel, opening large sections of western Virginia to settlement and commerce. The first battles of the Civil War occurred for control of the Turnpike, and ultimately western Virginia. Union victories enabled the counties to form a new government which led to the establishment of the State of West Virginia.
