Indian Territory
Indian Territory of Huttonsville, Elkwater, Valley Head and Mingo, named for the large impact Indian tribes had on the early settlement of this area, is located at the southern tip of Randolph County. The town of Mingo was given its name for the tribe of Mingo Indians, a branch of Iroquois, who were notorious for massacres of the early settlers of the area. Indian Territory is a place of much Revolutionary and Civil War History. It became the headquarters of Generals George McClellan and J. J. Reynolds of the Union Army in 1861. General Robert E. Lee located his troops in the area while he directed the Cheat Mountain campaign.
