Roaring Creek
Norton was formerly known as Roaring Creek Junction, but with the coming of the new West Virginia Coal Company, larger town was built and named for the President of the Company, R. F. Norton. Coalton was originally named Womelsdorff, due to its location in a thriving coal center. Mabie was originally called Fisher, but in 1897 was changed to Mabie after Walter mabie erected a band mill in the community. Cassity is located on a stream by that name which is a branch of the Middle Fork River. Cassity at one time had a large coal operation which made it a prosperous town.
