Location of the first land battle of the Civil War in June, 1861, which became known as the Phillipi Races due to the hasty retreat of Confederate troops when Union soldiers took control of the bridge. Built in 1852, the bridge itself was constructed by Lemuel Chenoweth, who also built the bridge in Beverly.
