Although West Virginia didn't officially begin until 1863, history in the Heart of West Virginia dates back to the French and Indian War. Two brothers deserting their posts at Fort Pitt (Pittsburgh), were the first to arrive in central West Virginia in 1762. By 1769, their families from
South Branch created the first permanent settlement west of the Alleghenies. A century later, the Union hold over the counties of western Virginia allowed them to form a new government, ultimately giving rise to the new state. The coming of the railroad in 1893 changed everything again. When you visit, discover our history, experience the heritage. There's history all around!
