Tour the five acre battlefield that was the location of one of the earliest and most decisive battles of the Civil War. The battle was waged to control the Staunton-Parkersburg Turnpike, the main route of commerce and trade between eastern and western Virginia and for western Virginia as a whole. Headquartered in Beverly, General McClellan captured the turnpike and secured the western Virginia frontier for the Union.
