Once known as Leadsville, the town of Elkins has been the hub of central West Virginia since it was transformed by Senator Henry Gassaway Davis and his son-in-law, Stephen B. Elkins in the late 1880s. Changing from a sleepy farming community to a vital industrial crossroads, the arrival of the West Virginia Central and Pittsburgh Railroad enabled the shipment of millions of board feet of timber from Davis’ lands further north. Intersection with the Staunton-Parkersburg Turnpike further fueled commerce and trade between cities on the eastern seaboard with towns along the Ohio River. Davis and Elkins established the college that bears their names and is housed in their former mansions, that today is the centerpiece of the city. Plan to use Elkins as your home base from which to explore rest of the area. |
