Heavily logged between 1897 and 1914, the Otter Creek Wilderness has been coming back naturally since the 1920s. Lying in a “bowl” formed by Shavers Mountain and McGowan Mountain, the vegetation now consists of second-growth timber, rhododendron and a variety of mosses. The roughly 20,000 acres reveals its history in old railroad beds, apple orchards, old farmsteads and logging camps.
