This Backway was a small section of the Staunton Parkersburg Turnpike until it was rerouted. Taking the switchbacks up the mountain will take you to Cheat Mountain Summit Fort, occupied by Union troops camped here in the summer of 1861. This site, located in the Monongahela National Forest is fully interpreted to tell the story of the encampment.
