This Backway was a small section of the Staunton Parkersburg Turnpike until it was rerouted. Taking the switchbacks up the mountain will take you to Cheat Mountain Summit Fort, occupied by Union troops camped here in the summer of 1861. This site, located in the Monongahela National Forest is fully interpreted to tell the story of the encampment.

Directions:
Go South-West from Elkins on US-219 [S Randolph Ave] for 17.9 miles
Bear RIGHT (South) onto US-250 [SR-92] for 12.8 miles
Turn RIGHT (West) onto CR-250 and go to Cheat Mountain Backway
